Protecting Human Burials As Cultural Heritage From Man-Made and Natural Threats

Our speaker, Attorney and Archaeologist, Ryan Seidemann, Chief of the Lands & Natural Resources Section at the Louisiana Department of Justice, discusses the threats of both environmental changes and developmental endeavors to human burials and the problems associated with protecting these sacred places. We explored past and future efforts to protect burials grounds from various threats and how to address these historic places which lie outside of the traditional notions of integrity and historic significance. The webinar discusses issues of looting; slavery ancestral burial grounds; Native American burial grounds; and environmental challenges to preservation efforts.

Ryan Seidemann, is the Chief of the Lands & Natural Resources Section of the Louisiana Department of Justice and his clients include the Louisiana Division of Archaeology, the Louisiana State Mineral and Energy Board, and the Louisiana Cemetery Board. Mr. Seidemann is also an adjunct professor of law at the Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge. Mr. Seidemann’s research includes examinations of water and wetlands law, cemetery and archaeological site protection law, and human remains analysis.
Before, During and After: U.S. Cultural Heritage Policy Support at the Smithsonian Institution

LCCHP's first lunchtime cultural heritage webinar. We discussed the efforts of the Smithsonian Institution to support the U.S. cultural heritage Policies. The webinar provides an overview of the Smithsonian Institution’s activities in support of U.S. policy to help protect and preserve cultural heritage around the globe. In this session, a panel of specialists from the Smithsonian presented overviews and case studies of Smithsonian work before, during, and after situations involving cultural heritage at risk and discuss the law governing these activities.
